Etchmiadzin, officially called Vagharshapat, is the spiritual capital of Armenia and the residence of the Catholicos of All Armenians. It is one of the oldest cities in the country and the heart of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Its main landmark, the Etchmiadzin Cathedral, was founded in the 4th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Other major churches — Shoghakat, Saint Hripsime, and Saint Gayane — are also part of the UNESCO listing and attract thousands of pilgrims and tourists each year. Located just 20 km from Yerevan, Etchmiadzin is perfect for a day trip.
